Or is it the fire that sets us free to return to the world outside?

There is a point in each burn, where all eyes are on the man and the only sound is the drums.

If not the safety and comfort of the flames, perhaps it is the ultimate destruction they represent... the cleansing... the purging of the demons which we all carried in with us, packed innocently alongside our tarps, our water, and our food...

He resists mortality, but in the end he falls. As must we all.

And when the man falls, and burns to ash... those demons are burnt too. We understand impermanence, and it is with a new sense of our own temporary natures that we leave the ashes behind. Tomorrow will dawn new, and the man who towered over us for a week as a beacon and an icon will be no more... blown clean away as smoke on the playa wind.

We follow his example over the next days... dispersing across the desert and across the world.

What is Burning Man? What's it all about?

Well, I suppose there is no easy answer.
