Who am I?
Who Is Elwing?
Elwing was an elvish maiden from JRR Tolkein's Middle Earth mythologies. In Tolkein's elvish tongue, Elwing means Star Spray. It is the name I gave to my boat. (Not the first vessel named Elwing, as it turns out. A tug in Brisbane during the '30s carried the name.) Those of you who have not read the Tolkein books will have not the slightest idea what I'm on about, so I'll stop here.
Some folks want to know what's up with the female name. I assumed the name of my boat, after many days spent on the ocean, responding to radio hails from other vessels. On the marine radio, you are hailed by the name of your vessel, not by your personal name. After a while, that's how you come to be identified. It works for me. Reminds me of days spent on the warm, blue Atlantic, chasing big fish or exploring the wrecks with SCUBA gear.
As I am finding, Elwing is actually a family name, and pretty widely spread around the world. If you're one of those people, please do drop me an email and let me know. It's been an unexpected pleasure to hear from Elwings around the world. I have heard so far from Sweden, Norway, Australia, Continental US, and Hawaii.
The Elwing who runs this website is generally known as Phillip. He'll answer to Phil, too. And there are other various and sundry names to which I will respond. But let's stick to Phillip. . or at least Phil.
So then, who is Phillip?
There's a lot that could be said. But I'll refrain. You don't really care anyway, or you'd have clicked on the link above.
I do love to write. I've done a little poetry, which you can peruse here, if you like. I'll later add some short fiction, when I either write some or whenever I can take the time to locate and reformat what I have already written. I'll probably do both.
As you probably saw on my index page, I enjoy the Outdoors.
